How can we ensure compliance??

So, according to my last post hand hygiene is a large concern with HAI's. There are many other factors to keep in mind, but why are healthcare personnel not following the simple task of washing hands?

As a nurse and caregiver how can we protect our patients and family members from acquiring such horrific infections that can cause devastating results.

Here are some ideas that may ensure compliance with infection control:
  • Education of staff members
    • ensuring staff understands the infection process and prevention techniques
    • Hand hygiene posters placed in a visible area of the hospitals were staff, patients, and visitors can view proper hand hygiene technique (previous post I posted an excellent picture of what germs can be carried on the hands, I believe this would be perfect for family members to see)
    • Patient admission videos to teach patients the importance of proper hand hygiene and how it is important to remind staff of proper hygiene
  • Safety coaches to conduct random spot checks to ensure compliance of proper hand hygiene
  • Hospital infection control teams to monitor compliance
  • Senior staff enforce disciplinary action of policies not following
  • Appropriate staffing
  • Place diagrams/pictures above sinks that outline proper hand hygiene
  • Alcohol based hand rubs easily accessible
  • Automatic sinks placed in every patients room
  • How staff accountable for their own actions
  • Staff motivations/incentives
These are just some ideas that I believe could be successful with ensuring infection control compliance, what are some others?

Discussion Topic: What are some of the HAIs patients are getting?
